Art Critic in California
Reference 123-co1-ci2
Job Type Contract
Job Status Citybound
Date Posted Friday, 26 August 2005
Company Information East Bay Monthly Magazine

Website: http://www.themonthly.com
Job Description
Location: Emeryville
State: CA
Salary: $50 for each monthly piece, which run from 250-325 words.
Application deadline: Saturday, December 31, 2005

The East Bay Monthly is looking for a regular art critic. As the East Bay’s monthly culture magazine, we advance one event every month in each of the five major cultural genres—art, music, dance, film, and theater—in a column called Critic’s Choice.

We need our art critic to be familiar with all exhibition venues in the East Bay and the most prominent ones in San Francisco. Because we do not run an events calendar and only showcase one art-related event each month, we aim to bring our readers into new territory, shed new light on shows taking place in familiar venues, and expose treasures big and small in the East Bay’s art scene. We will only advance quality shows, but they need not always be in traditional venues.

Qualifications As in all the pages of The Monthly, we look for distinctive, intelligent voices. Our art critic must be able to write knowledgeably about contemporary art—painting, photography, sculpture. Knowledge of non-traditional forms like cartooning, performance art, and video art would be grand also.
Compensation $50 for each monthly piece, which run from 250-325 words.
How to Apply To be considered, please e-mail (krix@themonthly.com) or snail mail four+ writing samples, a resume, cover letter, and (if sending regular mail) a self-addressed, stamped envelope (big enough for the clips, if you want them returned) to:
